Born of a commission from ‘Derby Jazz’ in early 2011, this exciting new band launched their debut CD Phil Robson - The Immeasurable Code (Whirlwind Recodings Ltd) at the Purcell Rooms on November 15th, 2011 as part of The London Jazz Festival.

The original line up included renowned New York-based saxophonist Mark Turner, but he is replaced for the 2012 tour by the fabulous and world-class Julian Arguelles, who has recently returned to the UK having been based in Germany for several years.  The band will be playing many highlights from the CD plus more Robson originals written especially for the tour and new lineup.  Their eponymous CD has received numerous plaudits from critics, and has been nominated in both The Parliamentary Jazz Awards and London Awards For Art & Performance in 2012.

Phil Robson – Guitar

A highly acclaimed guitarist and composer, Phil has won many awards, including the Best Jazz Musician of the Year in the 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.  As a band leader, Phil has fronted many innovative projects of varying types and sizes, including his jazz-and-strings group 6 Strings & The Beat.  He has also worked with a whole host of legends from Barbra Streisand to David Liebman, and the band Partisans, which he co-leads with saxophonist Julian Siegel, has been a major influence on the European ‘nu-jazz’ scene and is always in great demand on the jazz circuit.

Julian Argüelles - Saxophones

Having recently completed four years with the HR Radio Band in Frankfurt, Germany, Julian was a founder member of the acclaimed band Loose Tubes, with whom he recorded two albums.  He is a seminal bandleader and composer and has since recorded many solo CDs, winning numerous awards and commissions.  As a sideman, Julian has worked with musicians drawn from around the world including Archie Shepp, Tim Berne, Hermeto Pascoal, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Peter Erskine, Chris McGregor, Evan Parker, Mike Gibbs, John Scofield, Carla Bley, Dudu Pukwana, The Kenny Wheeler Big Band and many more.

Gareth Lockrane – Flute

An exceptional and versatile talent, Gareth is also a pianist and composer/arranger whose highly acclaimed CD No Messin’ won best CD in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2010.  In 2002 he formed Grooveyard with saxophonist Alex Garnet which went on to win the title of Best European Jazz Group in the 2003 Granada Jazz Festival.  He also leads his own septet and the Gareth Lockrane Big Band, which plays his own compositions, blending heavy grooves and luscious orchestrations to spectacular effect.

Michael Janisch – Bass

Already prominent on the International jazz scene at the age of 33, USA born Mike is a dynamic talent and one of the most in demand musicians in the UK and beyond.  Described as one of the UK’s most exciting improvisers by the Guardian, and as a brilliantly imaginative player by Jazzwise, Mike has shared the stage with many jazz legends as well as stars such as Annie Lennox, Kevin Spacey and Cat Stevens.  As a band leader he has built up a strong reputation for world class collaborations between USA and UK musicians.

Ernesto Simpson – Drums

Ernersto Simpson is a unique talent from Cuba, where his musical upbringing was influenced by a complexity of styles of African, Afro-Cuban and South American rhythms.  Ernesto plays in a variety of musical arenas including jazz, R&B, Latin and a variety of ethnic music forms, and has developed a strong reputation on the New York and London scenes for his powerful, innovative style and commitment to excellence and perfection.  A regular member of the fabulous Richard Bona Group, he has also shared the stage with renowned musicians such as Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Dizzy Guillespie to name just a few.
