Phronesis And Empirical Nominated For MOBO Awards 2010

Two major US pianists, Robert Glasper and Brad Mehldau and British-born jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin are up against UK jazz favourites Emprical and Phronesis in the 15th MOBO Awards.

Singer/Songwriter Natalie Williams, who works regularly with the Ronnie Scott's All Stars, has also been nominated in the Soul/R&B category.

Past winners in the jazz category have included Soweto Kinch, Yolanda Brown and Jamie Cullum, while famously the jazz award was dropped in 2005 to predictable horror from the jazz community at the idea of a 'Music Of Black Origin' awards event that felt jazz was an irrelevance.

Dizzee Rascal, Professor Green, N-Dubz and Plan B each have three nominations for the UK urban music awards, while Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys are all up for international awards. Chart-topping UK rapper, Tinie Tempah, leads the field with a total of four nominations.

"I am very proud of the level of talent in the U.K.," said Kanya King, CEO and founder of MOBO, in a statement.

This year's ceremony takes place at Liverpool Echo Arena on Oct. 20 and it will be televised live on BBC Three.
