Written by  Administrator

23rd – 26th OCTOBER 2013

Running concurrently with WOMEX 13, Jazz Services Ltd presents Made In The UK Cardiff, supported by ESIP.  The mini-concert series is an extension of the highly successful Made In The UK series that that has run for the past 6 years at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival in New York, USA, presenting the best of the UK’s jazz artists to an international audience.

Performing at Made In The UK Cardiff are some of the UK’’s finest jazz performers, who between them cover a huge amount of musical ground and demonstrate the diversity of the UK’s jazz scene.  Pianist ZOE RAHMAN combines her Bengali ancestry with Western jazz to dazzling effect, while singer CHRISTINE TOBIN explores the poetry of W.B. Yeats through her intriguing blend of jazz and folk sounds.  CLEVELAND WATKISS’ extraordinary vocals leap between jazz and soul with ease, and JULIAN ARGÜELLES’ strident saxophone leads a vibrant group of fantastic young players.

Of the Welsh stars on show, HUW WARREN and PAULA GARDINER present their delicate piano and bass duet.  THE LONELY HEARTS RUGBY CLUB bestride the jazz/world boundaries in a brilliant big-band setting, while BURUM’s jazz arrangements of Welsh folk tunes offer a wholly different but equally enthralling take on the genre divide.

Finally, closing the series on Saturday night at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is UK-US supergroup THE IMPOSSIBLE GENTLEMEN, with Salford guitarist Mike Walker leading his cohorts through a set of quirky, lively and effortlessly sophisticated contemporary jazz.
