The BBC Young Musician of the Year Award has previously only been an opportunity to celebrate the best young classical music talent, but we're delighted to learn that 2014 will see the inaugural Jazz Award being included as well.
The competition is open to any young jazz instrumentalists who will be aged 18 or under on 1st January 2014 and resident in the UK, and applicantions are being welcomed now until the deadline of 18th October.
Kerry Clark, Competition Manager for the BBC Young Musician 2014, says, "BBC Young Musician has been around for more than 30 years and has a pretty good record at finding starry winners, but this is the first time we have included a jazz element and we’re really looking forward to it."
The Jazz Award will run alongside the classical competition - entrants in the two categories will not be judged against one other - and the jazz final will take place on 8th March 2014. Both the auditions and the final will be recorded for TV, with the winner taking home £2000.
