Earlier this year, Jazz Services invited applications from bands wishing to take part in the Made In The UK scheme, a series of concerts held at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival in New York state. The series is organised by international concert promoters ESIP and has been running with increasing success and impact for several years.
Jazz Services put together an independent selection panel of jazz professionals from across the scene and industry to consider the entries and help select the final names for their shortlist. They faced a difficult task, as we were overwhelmed at the response – more than 70 acts applied for the showcase, which offers bands the opportunity to perform at Rochester as well as a month’s working visa in the USA, an invaluable opportunity to perform, make contacts and get a foothold in America. The successful Scottish bands included in the final line-up were selected through a similar scheme run by the Scottish Jazz Federation.
The panel’s shortlist has now been considered by John Nugent, the director of the Rochester Jazz Festival, and the final selections have been made. However, the full festival line-up is not being officially announced until March 2013, so we’ll have to keep you on tenterhooks until then before we can release the names of next year’s participants.
We’d like to thank everyone who applied – as with all such schemes, sadly there are only a limited number of spaces available. But we hope to be involved in the series again in the future, so keep an eye out for further announcements about more opportunities for British jazz abroad…
