Reuben began playing piano and violin at five years old and was raised on an eclectic
mix of music including jazz, gospel, neo soul, hip hop, RnB and classical music. His
professional journey began in church where he would play every week fine honing his skills
in improvisation and the blues.
This eventually led him to study at the Birmingham Conservatoire. There he soon began to
perform in and around the Midlands with the support and exposure from projects born of
jazz legend Andy Hamilton and promoters, Birmingham Jazz. He soon went on to perform at
numerous international jazz festivals including San Sebastian, Jaen, Mostly, and Valladolid as
well as blues, pop and gospel gigs and festivals. He has worked with artists such as new soul
sensation, pianist and vocalist Avery Sunshine and blues artist Aynsley Lister.
At the beginning of 2011 he joined the Abram Wilson Quartet. To date the band have played at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre supporting the Canadian jazz vocalist Nikki Yanofsky and Kings Place, London. The Quartet are due to perform on the Jamie Cullum Show later this year before once again taking centre stage at Kings Place alongside Jason Marsalis.
At 19 years of age James recently began his first year at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance specialising in jazz. He has already demonstrated he is an exceptional pianist bringing a new flavour of jazz to the London jazz scene with influences from Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, D'Angelo, Ahmed Jamal and Brian McKnight.
