Led by London-based Danish bass player Jasper Høiby, Phronesis are touring the UK in May 2012 to mark the release of their fourth album, Walking Dark, (Edition). Høiby describes Walking Dark as "a joint Phronesis adventure" ? the first album in which all members of the band contribute to the writing, as well as the arranging. Despite these individual compositional textures, each track nevertheless displays the characteristic groove-driven "Phronesis sound", incorporating infectious striking themes, constantly shifting complex rhythmic patterns and exploratory openness. In 2010 Phronesis received nominations for "Best Jazz Ensemble" at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and "Best Jazz Act" at the MOBO Awards, and their third album, Alive (Edition), was chosen as "Jazz Album of the Year" by Jazzwise and MOJO Magazines. 2010 also saw the trio gain increasing attention in Europe, with performances at the Banlieues Bleues Festival in Paris, and the Copenhagen and North Sea Jazz Festivals in addition to the Brecon, Glasgow and London Jazz Festivals in the UK. In 2011 Phronesis received an outstanding reception on their first tour of North America, including the Montreal and Ottawa Jazz Festivals and the legendary Jazz Standard club in New York. On their return, the trio premiered their "Pitch Black" project at Brecon Jazz Festival ? a performance in total darkness, which was described in a 5-star review by the Telegraph as a ?unique, unmissable triumph?. "Pitch Black" was also repeated in Germany and to a sell-out Purcell Room at the 2011 London Jazz Festival in November. The trio have been nominated for a 2012 London Jazz Award for this project. Jasper Høiby grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. He created Phronesis to perform his original compositions in 2005, following his graduation from the Royal Academy of Music in London. Phronesis' debut album, Organic Warfare, was released in November 2007 on Loop Records, and charted in the US iTunes "top 100 selling albums" for two months following its release. Their second album, Green Delay, was released in June 2009, receiving critical acclaim from The Guardian, Jazzwise (who voted it as one of their top ten albums of 2009) and The Times. In addition to Phronesis, Høiby has performed on 14 albums and toured throughout the UK and Europe with a number of original projects. Ivo Neame studied saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music but has since mainly been found in the piano chair, performing and recording with many well-known artists in the UK and abroad including the Cinematic Orchestra, Julian Siegel, Gilad Atzmon, Stan Sulzmann, Matthew Herbert, Mark Lockheart, Guy Barker and the MOBO-award-winning Kairos 4tet. He is also a member of the Loop Collective - a community of London-based improvising musicians. His own Quartet released their first CD Caught In The Light Of Day in 2009 (Edition Records). Anton Eger is the son of a Norwegian father and Swedish musician mother and was raised in Norway, Romania, Venezuela and Sweden. He now lives in Copenhagen, Denmark. He spent five years studying at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, and has since toured the world performing both contemporary jazz and stadium rock, with a foot firmly planted in both worlds.
