Biography

Inspirational and eclectic pianist/keyboardist/composer Geoff Eales formed the dynamic jazz-rock fusion band Isorhythm in Autumn 2010. He hand-picked four master improvisers in order to take his music forward : Ben Waghorn, Carl Orr, Fred T Baker and Asaf Sirkis. Their debut album Shifting Sands, Geoff's ninth as leader, was released to impressive critical acclaim in November 2011, drawing comparisons to Chick Corea's Return to Forever outfits. Isorhythm tours the UK in April & May.

Geoff Eales is a Ph.D graduate from Cardiff University, where he specialized in Composition and the music of American composer Aaron Copland. He is a former member of the BBC Big Band and before his late-blossoming career as a jazz artist in his own right, one of London's foremost studio musicians.

Reeds player Ben Waghorn is one of the UK's most talented improvisers. A former member of NYJO, Ben is an incredibly versatile player, much in demand on the British jazz scene. He is currently involved in a wide variety of projects, most notably those of Keith Tippett and Dave Stapleton.

Carl Orr is one of the world's greatest jazz-rock fusion guitarists. He was a major force on the Australian musical scene for over twenty years from the mid-seventies to the mid-ninetees before re-locating to London in 1995. He has worked with many fusion superstars including Billy Cobham, George Duke and Randy Brecker and has released many acclaimed albums under his own name.

As well as being a virtuoso on both fretted and fretless bass guitar, Fred T. Baker is also a very fine guitar player. He works regularly with Phil Miller's "In Cahoots" and has collaborated extensively with Harry Beckett, John Etheridge and Elton Dean. He is currently professor of bass guitar at Birmingham Conservatoire.

Since leaving Tel Aviv for London in 1999, Asaf Sirkis has been a major force on the UK and international jazz scene. An expert in Indian and Middle Eastern rhythms, he is the first choice drummer for many of the UK's leading bands. As well as running his own trio, he is an indispensable member of the celebrated Lighthouse Trio, a collaboration that involves two great improvisers - Tim Garland and Gwilym Simcock.

  • "A dream band... This vibrant album is a welcome addition to [Geoff Eales'] impressive discography" - Chris Parker, LondonJazz

  • "Geoff Eales' Shifting Sands (33 Jazz) is a departure for one of our most talented pianists, featuring Eales himself on Fender Rhodes as well as acoustic piano and presenting his band, Isorhythm, as close kin to Chick Corea's Return to Forever-onwards outfits. The music, all Eales' own, is replete with drama, powerful themes and subtle contrasts, all superbly realized on saxophone, electric and acoustic guitar driven by a punchy, exacting rhythm section" - Jazz UK

  • " ...full-throated fusion... Move over, Chick!!"

 - Robert Shore, Jazzwise
