Biography
Playing the compositions of pianist John Law, the trio aims to become one of Europe’s foremost listening groups: listening to each other, to the sound they produce, individually and collectively, and to the acoustics of the environment they are playing in: balance, poise and a sense of beauty are what the trio tries to achieve. On only its second outing the trio recorded nearly two hour’s worth of music at the Italian studio of Artesuono; the resulting album, The Art Of Sound, was released in the Summer of 2007. This tour supports the release of the trio’s second album, Congregation. The new album is an attempt to take the trio in a slightly different direction; whilst still maintaining the feel for ballads and beauty, hallmarks of the highly melodic first album, Congregation showcases a repertoire of slightly more extrovert material.
John Law, a prize-winning classical prodigy on piano (he was playing at four and composing at eight), is renowned as one of Europe's finest jazz pianist/composers. Turning away from the life of a concert pianist to pursue jazz and improvised music when he was 23, his work has covered a wide spectrum: from freely-improvised experimental music through classically inspired solo piano concerts to more straight-ahead contemporary jazz work with his trios and quartets. He has made over 25 albums and performed worldwide, working with musicians such as Andy Sheppard, Tim Garland and Evan Parker.
Since his graduation from the Guildhall in 1998, where he studied both jazz and classical double bass, Sam Burgess has travelled the world performing with artists such as Guy Barker, Dave O'Higgins, Pete King, Gareth Williams, Claire Martin, Jim Mullen, Alan Barnes, Tim Whitehead, John Horler and John Dankworth. As a busy session musician, Sam has also played on Robbie Williams’ album Swing When You're Winning, and various film soundtracks such as Bridget Jones's Diary and Hannibal.
Asaf Sirkis, an Israeli now based in London, first came to prominence through his work with Gilad Atzmon and his Orient House Ensemble which toured the world, performing at major festivals and recording four acclaimed albums. Asaf leads two trios of his own: Inner Noise, and Asaf Sirkis New Trio, the latter recently released its debut album, The Monk.

- "The jazz grapevine has been passing the word around about John Law's trio with bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Asaf Sirkis since the release of their first CD, The Art of Sound Vol1, in 2007. One of the most respected and admired groups on today's scene, the trio have gathered terrific reviews and - equally important - ecstatic response from live audiences throughout the country. John Law has long been known as a gifted and single-minded soloist and composer - this trio finds him in the company of a musical partnership that has found a rare collective spirit." - Serious/London Jazz Festival
- "A sublime trio…a band heading for great things!" - John Fordham, Jazz UK/The Guardian
- "Hearing John Law’s trio had me paying rapt attention to every bar, every nuance in a way I don’t remember since listening for 30 years. One to watch out for in 2008." - Nod Knowles chief executive, Bath Festivals and president of Europe Jazz Network
- "Pianist John Law has been a world-class improviser at the sharper end of British jazz for years, but this new trio immediately puts him into a whole new category: as melodic, accessible and catchy as anyone in the crowded piano trio sector. Law manages to combine the best elements of the classically influenced northern European jazz tradition with hard-swinging, intensely textured solos. One of the jazz albums of the year." - Phil Johnson, Independent on Sunday
