Biography
The Jon Lloyd Quintet was formed in 2009 and is currently Jon?s foremost jazz project, representing a new musical development which builds on his free jazz and improvised music reputation. The music has a new melodic and harmonic richness, accessible yet still with a complex edge, and the compositions are interpreted by some of the country?s finest jazz improvisers. The quintet?s sound brings together elements of European contemporary jazz, post-bop, fusion, modal jazz, free music and minimalism. However, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and the group is fast building a reputation as one of the most exciting new contemporary jazz groups in the UK. The quintet has played to enthusiastic audiences in jazz clubs across the UK including Dempsey?s, the Vortex, Brighton Jazz, Fleece Jazz (where the group recorded a live CD) and the Frome Festival 2011.
Soprano saxophonist Jon Lloyd is perhaps best known for his seminal free-jazz quartets in the nineties, which played a Braxton-esque fusion of free playing and complex written structures. He and pianist John Law have worked together for twenty years, playing with Paul Rogers, Mark Sanders, Tim Wells, Klaus Kugel, Michel Pilz and Gerry Hemingway. John Law now plays primarily with his Art of Sound trio, featuring bassist Yuri Goloubev and drummer Asaf Sirkis. This trio tours the UK and Europe constantly, having gained a massive reputation in the European jazz world, as indicated by playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2011. In addition to his work with John Law, drummer Asaf Sirkis keeps stellar company, playing with Jeff Berlin, Larry Coryell, Gwilym Simcock, Tim Garland and Gilad Atzmon, to name but a few. Guitarist Rob Palmer is fast gaining an excellent reputation, playing with French composer Daniel Biro and UK saxophonist Theo Travis, and Rodney Teague is known as a much-in-demand session electric bassist.

- "Ambitious and virtuosic... [Jon Lloyd is] one of the most striking writers at the sharp end of British jazz and improvisation" - John Fordham, The Guardian
- "Lloyd is a much underrated saxophonist. His delivery is as plain and persuasive as a speaking voice. There are no histrionics, no unnecessary elaborations. He makes his point, reinforces it, and moves on" - The Penguin Guide to Jazz
- "Powerful and at times magical stuff" - Downbeat
- "Powerful, understated... ECM-ish nocturnal slowburners, tricky post-bop themes...grab the attention." - Jazzwise.
