| Jazz Services Recording Support Scheme
Jazz Services has received funding from Arts Council England to record 8 bands over two years. This pilot scheme is being operated in conjunction with 33 Records studio and distribution outlets. The first scheme ended with the deadline on 30th September 2006 and has proved a great success. The recipients of the first four awards were the Basil Hodge Quintet, The Jamil Sheriff Octet, Jan Kopinski and Reflektor and the Richie Howard Quartet. All exciting bands that reflect Jazz Services touring policy which is: 'good quality touring that promotes musicians of merit not readily promoted by the commercial sector and reflects the Jazz Services’ equal opportunities policy. The touring scheme is geared to small groups and covers the full range of jazz and jazz related music idioms and styles.' The recording project must be a new project that has not been previously released.
Applications can be made by musicians, band leaders, co-operative bands, record labels, partnerships or their representatives. The Recording Support Scheme can support up to the full amount for bands and groups of not normally more than five musicians. However, larger bands are eligible to apply. The aim of the scheme is to promote original jazz by musicians who are resident in the UK through audio recording and present to the public through production and distribution of CDs by both traditional and online means. Submissions must be for recording projects with unreleased material which promotes small groups not readily promoted by the commercial sector and covers the full range of jazz related music idioms and styles. Applicants must understand that, if successful, they must promote their CD through a JSL National Touring Support Scheme tour. 1250 CDs will be produced of which 250 copies will be for the band’s use, 250 copies for promotional purposes by Jazz Services and 33 Records, and 750 copies for distribution. After five years the rights to the recording revert to the band.
